Comparison of Social Marketing Tools

The different social media tools are evolving rapidly, here is a comparison of different social media tools and What to effectively use them for.

Twitter: Twitter is a great way to test different message and find out which are engaging and relevant to your target audience.

  • Share Content: Twitter provides an easy mechanism to share existing or new content, put out information about the organization.
  • Feedback: Twitter more importantly provides a very effective mechanism to directly hear feedback from your customers - good or bad feedback, either way the feedback will help you create new opportunities or save existing customer relationships.
  • Advertisement: You can purchase key words and your tweet would be the first one shown at the top in response to the search, leverage unique hashtags to enable users to communicate with other users of your product/service.

FacebookA central and open communication portal, Facebook is the hub through which businesses want to drive social interaction. Positive or negative, companies can use Facebook to get their messages out and to receive customer feedback. Using pages as a persona allows companies to position their brands on other relevant pages. Facebook is a great point to drive traffic to your site.

QuoraCompanies may not be able to directly use Quora as a marketing tool. Yet the employees can use it as a marketing tool to position themselves as a market leader.

For example CTO can answer relevant technology questions in his domain, Product Management team can answer questions about the domain, challenges/trends etc. They can position themselves as a the thought leaders in this domain.

LinkedIn: Effective way to improve your klout or reputation leading to influence. Linkedin allows you to demonstrate you thought leadership.

  • Influence: Participating in relevant industry groups, answering questions on current trends/challenges in the industry group and positioning your self as a thought leader in the domain.
  • Information: Encourage your employees to be on LinkedIn, connect with Partners, Customers. Post links to their blogs etc. Post any conferences or event you are attending on LinkedIn
  • Competition: Follow your competition on LinkedIn, see what they are talking about. You might also be interested to see who is leaving the company or who they are hiring.
PeerIndex (or Klout): These do not have a short term effect, but down the road as multitude of social networking site and social streams emerge these will play an important role. Having a high social standing would be a very useful credibility badge.

The only thing I would add for a someone who doesn't understand these tools by now is that you can have a good social media strategy without using every single tool out there. Try to use the best ones for your company. For example, we are a service based company so we use Twitter and Linkedin, but not Facebook. We may in the future but we haven't put too much time and effort into Facebook for now. In addition, keep you personal life and your business life separate. the quickest way to annoy and lose customers is to send them family photos and invitations to birthday parties, and the quickest way to lose friends is to try to sell them something every other update!!
